2026 fare increase FAQ (Frequently asked questions)

2026 fare increase frequently asked questions - FAQ

From 1 April 2026, long-distance rail fares will increase by around 3.4%, with an additional increase to premium travel options of RailBeds and Sleeper cabins to reflect the added value of sleeping accommodation, onboard meals and service throughout your trip.

What does a RailBed or a Sleeper carriage ticket offer?

Exclusive to the Spirit of Queensland, a RailBed is a spacious reclinable seat by day that converts to a lie-flat bed at night with all main meals included in the fare and served to your seat. Exclusive to the Spirit of the Outback, a Sleeper is the only rail journey in Queensland with your own private cabin and all main meals included in an exclusive dining carriage with a dedicated onboard chef.

Why is there a fare change?

The fare update is to ensure the unique travel experiences offered continue to cover the cost-of-service delivery, while maintaining value for customers.

Fare Variation for Spirit of Queensland and Tilt Train services

For a short time in mid-January 2026, some Economy Seat fares on Spirit of Queensland services and B-Quick Tilt Train fares were available at a smaller fare increase than planned. This was a one-time occurrence and is no longer available.

What does this mean for my booking?

    • If you booked during this period, your booking remains valid at the price you paid.
    • If you make changes to your booking, the current fare will apply, which may be higher than your original ticket price.

Do I need to do anything?

No action is required. You can travel as planned with your existing booking.

Thank you for your understanding.

Service availability

Occasionally, some Queensland Rail Travel services may be unavailable due to special events or partnerships with tourism operators.
