Carriage A is the leading carriage and has the employee operations area at the start of the carriage, including where the driver is located. There is an entry area with doors on each side. This front set of doors in Carriage A are not used by customers to join and leave the train, as they are reserved for employee operations.
In the seating area of the carriage, there are nine rows with a total of 27 Business Seats and 3 Accessible Spaces. There are two seats on one side and one on the other. Seat 30 is at the front of the carriage and Seat 4 is at the trailing end.
We will explore the Accessible Spaces and Seats in this carriage first, which are used by people with disability. They are closest to the entry door at the trailing end of the carriage, which is used by all customers for entry and exit into the carriage.
Accessible Seats are available, including for people transferring into the seat from a mobility device. These are seats A4 and A5, which are in the last row of seats, and have a height of 430mm. A nearby seat is included in the booking of an Accessible Seat for eligible carers if customers require support from a carer during their journey.
These Accessible Seats have generous recline and width and include:
- armrests (aisle can be raised)
- footrest
- tray table
- headphone jack
- power point
- reading light
- complimentary Wi-Fi (limits apply).
Carriage A also has three Accessible Spaces for customers to travel in, or store, a mobility device such as a wheelchair or mobility scooter.
For safety reasons, it is recommended that mobility devices are secured using tie down straps. We ask that customers let our team know their preference when booking or on the day of travel. If using tie-down straps, the Onboard team can secure or release these when the train is stationary throughout the journey.
Many types of mobility devices can be accommodated. In general, dimension limits for mobility devices in Carriage A are 680mm wide by 1200mm long. There is more information available on the
Accessibility pages of this website or speak to your consultant at the time of booking.
Accessible space A1 is behind the last row of seats on the left in the direction of travel. This space is 550mm wide x 1700mm long.
Spaces A2 and A3 are behind the last row of seats on the right in the direction of travel. They are generally combined and used together due to the limited size of each space. Each of these spaces are 600mm wide x 1750mm long, providing a total combined space of 1200mm wide x 1750mm long. Two smaller mobility devices may fit safely in spaces A2 and A3 but can only be reserved individually by contacting us on 1800 872 467.
Signage with raised text, braille and a hearing loop for public address announcements are provided throughout the carriages.
The Business Seats have generous recline and width. Features include:
- armrests
- footrest
- tray table
- headphone jack
- power point
- reading light
- complimentary Wi-Fi (limits apply).
Seats in the front row in Carriage A do not have a footrest. These seats may sometimes be booked for customers travelling with an assistance animal where floor space can be provided to comfortably accommodate the animal.
The seat pocket includes a safety card, onboard menu, headphones and other onboard information. A braille safety card is available for people who are blind and have requested assistance in the booking process. Onboard entertainment is available for your enjoyment via shared screens positioned in the ceiling. Much of the entertainment content has closed captions. Complimentary headphones and a motion sickness bag are located in the seat pocket.
The seat number is located above each seat and space, just under the door to the overhead luggage compartment, with braille signage. Enclosed overhead storage is available for hand luggage. The aisle width between the seats is 530mm. Grab rails are available throughout the carriage for safety, including on the tops of the seats.
There is a passenger emergency button in the ceiling above the seats at both ends of the seating area in the carriage, which is also indicated in braille. In case of a personal emergency, customers can press this button to alert the Onboard team and request assistance. An emergency button is also located in all toilets.
Emergency stop handles are also available in the ceiling above the seats at both ends of the seating area in the carriage. These are also indicated in braille. The emergency stop handle is available in case of an emergency. These handles should be used to stop the train only in extreme circumstances. Pull the handle to stop the train. Penalties apply for misuse.
At the end of the carriage there is an internal door that can be opened by pressing the ‘open door’ button which is at around waist height and includes braille signage at the side. The door width is 710mm when open.
Through the doorway there is a luggage rack for carry-on items. A checked luggage service is available for all customers and is recommended in this carriage.
There is a drink fountain with filtered water opposite the luggage rack. There is a narrow corridor that is 745 mm wide at the narrowest point. The corridor is not straight, it has a slight bend. It leads to the end of Carriage A and the accessible unisex toilet.
There is a button to open the sliding door to the accessible unisex toilet. There is braille signage on the left of the door, at about waist height, and buttons on both sides. This doorway is 760mm wide when open. The door can be closed by pressing the ‘close’ button on the wall on the right as you enter the toilet, under the grab rail. A lock lever must be turned to secure the door. The floor width in this room is 1500mm and the length is 2200mm.
