Before you go Spirit of the Outback

Before you go – Spirit of the Outback Sleepers

Here are some handy tips to consider when preparing for your upcoming journey on the Spirit of the Outback travelling in Sleepers.

Luggage

Our Single and Twin Sleeper cabins are cosy to keep you comfortable, but there isn’t a lot of room for large luggage. We recommend an overnight carry-on bag with your travel essentials for your journey on the train and check in larger bags.

Carry-on luggage

Your carry-on bag should be no more than 23cm wide x 34cm high x 48cm long to fit under the bed once it’s turned down.

Checked luggage

The luggage allowance is two 20kg items per customer travelling in Single or a Twin Sleeper. Luggage check-in opens one (1) hour prior to departure or if you are joining at an unattended station our Onboard team will assist with your luggage upon arrival of the train. Your checked-in luggage will be available for collection at the end of the journey.

Please see our Luggage policy for more details about luggage and allowances.

Overnight items

  • Pack your travel essentials into your carry-on luggage.
  • Bring medication you may need on the train with you in your carry-on luggage.
  • A complimentary amenities pack is provided, but you may wish to pack any additional toiletries including necessary face and body products, hair products, toothbrush and toothpaste.
  • Each cabin has a small wash basin with access to hot and cold water. Shared toilet and shower facilities are available at the end of each carriage.
  • You may like to consider loungewear, pyjamas and slip-on or waterproof footwear for moving to and from facilities during the night and early morning.
  • If you are a light sleeper, you may want to bring some earplugs and an eyemask. Train travel brings varying levels of light, sound and movement as you pass through stations, towns and level crossings.
  • You will be able to use and charge an electrical device with a 240-volt power outlet provided in each cabin.

Complimentary items provided include:

In the cabin

  • bath towel
  • bar of soap

Amenities pack:

  • face cloth
  • hand sanitiser
  • moisturiser
  • lip balm

In the shower

  • body wash

Bed turndown

At night, our Onboard team will enter your cabin and make up your bed for the night.

Please place your overnight bag on your seat before you head to dinner, and our team will make sure it is placed for your easy access when you are ready to return to your cabin and settle in for the night.

In the morning you can place the ‘Please prepare my sleeper for day travel’ tag on your cabin door and our team will ensure your comfy lounge chair is ready for day travel.

On the train

  • Complimentary tea and coffee is available from the Shearers Rest Lounge throughout your journey.
  • The temperature on the train stays a consistent 22 degrees, which can feel cold compared with outside temperatures. You may wish to bring a light jacket or cardigan.
  • We recommend wearing flat shoes onboard for moving about, as you will experience some swaying and movement as the train travels through country and at various speeds.
  • When walking through the train, place your hand on the wall or grab rail, to help steady yourself in case of sudden train movement.
  • In your cabin, you’ll find a small wash basin with drinkable water, a water cooler is available at the end of each carriage. You may wish to bring a small water bottle with you.
  • Spirit of the Outback is a licenced venue and alcohol is not permitted to be brought on board. Alcohol is available for purchase from the Lounge or Restaurant during your journey.
  • Mobile reception is limited onboard due to the remote locations we travel through. Please expect that you will not be able to connect through your device to call, message or email for significant portions of the journey.
  • Spirit of the Outback is not equipped with Wi-Fi service. Please prepare for your journey by downloading your favourite entertainment content to your device before you travel.
  • Bring along some books, colouring in, sewing, games or cards, in between your enjoyment of the spectacular views!

Before you go, we recommend you have a look at our online Virtual tour, where you can view the cabin and facilities available on this service.

Our team are there to help if you have any questions once you are onboard.

The most important thing to pack is your sense of fun and adventure!

Enjoy your journey.
