5 ways to discover the Mackay Isaac Region… like a true local!

Mackay - Yuwibara Country

Travelling is about breaking free from our comfort zones, putting ourselves to the test and becoming immersed in the local culture. So, it's time for you to ditch the travel guide, step off the beaten path and experience the Mackay Isaac Region… like a true local!

1. The pinnacle of pie experiences

Your visit to the Mackay Isaac Region wouldn't be complete without a taste of the 'world-famous' Pinnacle Pub pie! Drive up to the Pioneer Valley and stop at the Pinnacle Pub for their freshly baked pies with a side of mushy peas and gravy… they won't disappoint! From the warm hospitality to the mouth-watering pies and desserts they have on their menu, the Pinnacle Pub is a compulsory stop and bucket list food experience in this region.

2. Blast from the past – stay at a heritage-listed hotel

The Nebo Hotel is a home away from home for anyone passing through the delightful little town of Nebo. Whether you're a local catching up with friends, a tourist on your travels, or a shift worker clocking off, everyone is welcomed! Established in 1886, the Nebo Hotel has been a community cornerstone for over a century. The history of the pub and hotel has been beautifully maintained for everyone to enjoy. Expect no less than good old-fashioned country hospitality! Great chats, ice cold beer, and their signature steak sandwich makes for an ideal evening in the outback.

3. Don't go chasing waterfalls – chase rockpools instead

If a plunge in the wild open ocean or a swim in a regular pool is not quite your cup of tea, one of Mackay Isaac's dreamy rockpools should do the trick! When visiting Cape Hillsborough, make sure you walk over to Orchid Island (accessed via Wedge Island) at low tide to swim in the beautiful crystal blue rockpool. A bit of rock hopping is required but this insta-worthy spot is totally worth it!

4. It's always Peak season

The Peak Range National Park is a string of volcanic formations near Emerald between Moranbah, Clermont, and Dysart. It's truly breathtaking to drive toward the National Park as the rocky formations stick out of the plains like icebergs on the ocean. The climb to the summit is quite intense – especially in a couple of sections, so good footwear with plenty of traction is a must! If hiking isn't for you, check out the range from sky high with a bird's eye view. Book a helicopter tour with Bush Heli-Services to experience Australia's rich bushland!

5. Wallabies and platypus are locals too

From the wallabies at sunrise on Cape Hillsborough beach, to the platypus viewing decks at Broken River, these iconic wildlife experiences are what the Mackay Isaac Region is known for. Nowhere else in the wild will you get so close to kangaroos, wallabies and platypus all in one region! You'll be sure to cross 'selfie with a wallaby' and 'spot a platypus' off your bucket list after a trip to this region.

If you're looking for personalised tours that will take you off the beaten track, Mackay Adventure Tours will have you experiencing some of the region's best-kept secrets!
